An accused in the brutal murder of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan back in 2013 met a similar fate in Lahore on Sunday. Amir Sarfaraz Tamba, a close associate of Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Lahore's Islampura area. Rushed to the hospital in critical condition, Tamba succumbed to his injuries soon after.
Tamba's demise comes six years after he and another accused, Mudassar, were acquitted by a Pakistani court citing 'lack of evidence' - a decision influenced by all witnesses turning hostile.
Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Bhikhiwind in Punjab, inadvertently crossed into Pakistan while in an inebriated state. Subsequently, he was sentenced to death on allegations of involvement in bomb blasts in Pakistan's Punjab province back in 1990 - claims vehemently denied by the Indian government. However, a higher court later upheld the decision and in 2012 his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
Lodged in Lahore's high-security Kot Lakhpat Jail, Singh was brutally attacked by fellow inmates with bricks and rods. He died of cardiac arrest in Jinnah Hospital Lahore in the wee hours of May 2, 2013, after being comatose for nearly a week following the brutal assault.
